What is the 'Yucca Man?' Massive hairy creatures stalk California’s Mojave Desert
For decades, residents, military personnel, travelers, and campers across Southern California’s Mojave Desert have reported encounters with enormous, hair-covered creatures collectively known as the “Yucca Man.” These accounts stretch from the Marine Corps base at Twentynine Palms to Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, Desert Hot Springs, Hemet, and Lucerne Valley, forming a disturbing regional pattern that remains deeply embedded in High Desert folklore.
One of the strangest reports involves two massive, human-faced creatures walking on all fours through a Yucca Valley neighborhood, accompanied by a pack of stray dogs.

WITNESS REPORTS
Two Human-Faced Creatures in Yucca Valley
The following account was submitted by JH, who received permission from his aunt and uncle to share their experience:
“My aunt Deborah and uncle Tom experienced this encounter sometime during the early 1990s in Yucca Valley, California.
“They were driving home around dusk. When they stopped at a stop sign approximately one block from where my aunt lived, two enormous, hair-covered creatures crossed directly in front of their truck.
“The creatures were walking on all fours, and they moved in perfect synchronization. My aunt said she could feel the earth shake with every step they took. She described the movements as stomps rather than ordinary footsteps.
“When the creatures reached the front of the truck, they turned their heads toward my aunt and uncle at exactly the same time. They stared at them briefly, then simultaneously turned their heads forward and continued marching toward the open desert.
“The sighting occurred near the boundary between the suburban neighborhood and the surrounding desert wilderness, where paved streets gave way to dirt roads and undeveloped land.
“One of the strangest details was that a pack of stray dogs accompanied the creatures. The dogs seemed to follow them as though the two creatures were the dominant animals in a makeshift wolf pack.
“My aunt and uncle both emphasized that the creatures had humanlike faces, despite walking on four legs.
“My uncle was terrified that the creatures might overturn the truck. Considering their immense size and the ground-shaking force of their movements, he believed they could have flipped the vehicle effortlessly.
“I have been fascinated by their experience since my aunt first told me about it years later. During my research, I found a much older account involving a prospector named Turner Helm, who reportedly described seeing a bear-like creature with a human face near Warner Springs during the 1800s.”
The 1971 Twentynine Palms Marine Base Incident
Another frequently repeated Yucca Man account allegedly occurred in early 1971 at the Marine Corps base in Twentynine Palms:
“In early 1971, an unusual incident reportedly occurred at the Marine base in Twentynine Palms, California.
“A Marine assigned to night guard duty at the rifle range was found the following morning in an almost incoherent condition. His rifle had reportedly been bent nearly in half.
“The Marine stated that he heard or sensed something moving in the dark desert. He raised his rifle and ordered the unseen individual or creature to halt.
“Instead of stopping, the figure charged toward him, seized the rifle, and bent it with tremendous force.
“The creature was described as resembling a Yeti or an Abominable Snowman. According to the account, federal officials were called to the base, and several men dressed in dark suits questioned local residents and searched for information.
“Residents living near the intersection of Valley Vista Street and Utah Trail reportedly saw two creatures that same night. One was extremely large, while the other appeared smaller.
“Neighborhood dogs began barking intensely, causing residents to look through their windows. Two residents, Johnny and Rae, reportedly witnessed the creatures and later spoke to investigators.
“Farther along the same road, the creatures were reportedly seen near a horse corral. The horses appeared frightened and agitated.
“Another sighting was said to have occurred around the same period inside what was then Joshua Tree National Monument. The witnesses were reportedly employees of the monument.”
The account was later circulated by veteran Bigfoot researcher Bobbie Short in February 2001. However, no publicly available military, FBI, or CIA documentation confirming the alleged investigation has been located.
Massive Creature Blocks a Car in Desert Hot Springs
“In May 1979, a young couple was leaving a condominium complex in Desert Hot Springs, north of Palm Springs, when an enormous hair-covered creature suddenly emerged from behind a yucca plant in front of their vehicle.
“The driver described the creature as having a chest the size of a refrigerator and arms that extended below its knees.
“It was reportedly so tall that the witnesses could only see it from approximately the middle of its body downward through the windshield.
“The creature was covered in long, tan-colored hair. It quickly disappeared into the darkness before the witnesses could obtain a clearer view.
“No footprints or other physical evidence were reportedly found.”
Eighteen-Inch Tracks Found Near Hemet
“Also in 1979, a creature estimated to stand approximately 12 feet tall was reportedly seen twice near Hemet, California, during a one-week period.
“During the first incident, the creature allegedly left 17 tracks in the mud along a rural road.
“The tracks were described as measuring approximately 18 inches long, with a distance of nearly six feet between impressions.
“Bigfoot researchers Douglas Trapp and Danny Perez reportedly investigated the location and conducted a stakeout near the area where the tracks had been discovered.
“The creature did not return while the researchers were present.”
The Lucerne Valley Cement Monster
“In 1988, two servicemen from Twentynine Palms were returning home from Big Bear Lake at approximately 9:00 p.m.
“As they approached an abandoned cement facility near Lucerne Valley, an enormous upright creature ran across the road in front of their vehicle.
“The creature was so large that the men could only see the lower portion of its body.
“For several seconds, the witnesses stared at each other in disbelief. One finally asked, ‘What the hell was that?’
“The other replied, ‘That was the Cement Monster. After him!’
“The driver stopped the vehicle while his companion retrieved a firearm from the glove compartment. The two men searched along the road and around the old cement facility but found no tracks, hair, or other evidence.
“They eventually concluded that they had encountered some form of prehistoric human or unknown upright primate and continued their journey home.”
Possible Yucca Man Photograph at Joshua Tree
An anonymous camper later reported a possible photographic encounter at Joshua Tree:
“Over Easter break, sometime around 1998 or 1999, I was camping and rock climbing at Joshua Tree with two friends.
“We stayed at Hidden Valley Campground. At some point during the trip, I photographed our campsite, which was positioned against several large rock formations beneath a well-known climbing route.

“Between the rocks was a deep crevice. It was not a complete cave, but the opening extended into darkness.
“When the photographs were developed, I noticed what appeared to be a primate-like face peering from inside the crevice.
“The image was not extremely clear, but the face was distinct enough that everyone I showed the photograph to noticed it.
“I later showed the photograph to a friend who had previously worked as a ranger at Joshua Tree. She looked at it and said, ‘That might be Yucca Man.’
“That was the first time I had ever heard the name.
“I am not currently certain where the photograph is, but I know that I did not throw it away.”
COMMENTARY
The Yucca Man tradition differs from many conventional Bigfoot reports because the alleged activity is concentrated in an arid desert environment rather than a heavily forested habitat. Reports frequently originate near isolated roads, military training areas, rocky canyons, desert communities, and the transition zones where developed neighborhoods meet open wilderness.
The Yucca Valley encounter is particularly unusual because the witnesses described two enormous creatures with humanlike faces moving on four legs. Most Yucca Man accounts involve upright, apelike figures. This report may represent a separate phenomenon that was later associated with Yucca Man because of its location and the creatures’ size and hair-covered bodies.
The synchronized movements are another noteworthy element. Both creatures allegedly walked in unison, turned their heads simultaneously, observed the witnesses, and then resumed their movements together. Natural animals traveling together can coordinate their behavior, but the precision described by the witnesses sounds unusually deliberate.
The accompanying stray dogs add an additional layer of mystery. Dogs commonly react to alleged cryptid activity by barking, hiding, refusing to advance, or displaying extreme agitation. In this case, the dogs apparently traveled calmly with the creatures. That behavior could suggest habituation, social dominance, or simple coincidence, though the witnesses interpreted the creatures as leaders of the pack.
The reported humanlike faces could conceivably result from brief, low-light observations of bears, large dogs, or other animals viewed from an unfamiliar angle. However, Southern California does not have a recognized native animal matching the reported combination of enormous size, human facial characteristics, synchronized quadrupedal movement, and ground-shaking footsteps.
The 1971 Marine base story is the foundational Yucca Man legend, but it has changed significantly as it has been retold. Some versions state that the Marine was found unconscious. Others describe him as dazed or incoherent. The weapon is variously described as a rifle, machine gun, or service firearm. The alleged participation of the FBI and CIA also remains unverified.
A rifle visibly bent nearly in half would represent extraordinary physical evidence. Without photographs, official records, a named guard, or the preserved weapon, the incident should be regarded as regional military folklore rather than a confirmed event.
The Desert Hot Springs, Hemet, and Lucerne Valley accounts more closely resemble traditional Bigfoot reports. These descriptions include tremendous height, long arms, broad torsos, upright movement, and rapid disappearance into remote terrain.
Joshua Tree’s rock formations, crevices, darkness, and immense wilderness can create conditions in which distance and scale are difficult to judge. Shadows within a crevice may also produce face-like patterns, a psychological effect known as pareidolia. Without the original photograph, enlargement, negative, or digital scan, the reported face cannot be evaluated.
The region itself is more extensive and ecologically varied than many people realize. Joshua Tree lies where the Mojave and Colorado desert ecosystems meet. Its valleys, mountains, boulder fields, oases, and wilderness areas contain numerous mammal species and large areas that receive relatively little human traffic.
This landscape may help explain why Yucca Man stories persist. The desert offers long sightlines in some places, but its ravines, boulder formations, abandoned structures, military land, and abrupt changes in elevation also provide countless places where an animal or person could disappear quickly.
Whether the Yucca Man represents an unknown primate, misidentified wildlife, desert hermits, folklore reinforced by repeated storytelling, or several unrelated phenomena grouped under one name, these reports have become an enduring part of Southern California’s High Desert mystery tradition.

FAQ
What is the Yucca Man?
The Yucca Man is the regional name given to an alleged large, hair-covered humanoid reported throughout Southern California’s High Desert, particularly around Twentynine Palms, Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, and nearby communities.
Was a Marine really attacked by the Yucca Man in 1971?
The story has circulated for decades, but no publicly available military or federal documentation has conclusively verified the alleged attack, damaged rifle, or government investigation.
Are all Yucca Man reports similar?
No. Some witnesses describe an upright Bigfoot-like creature, while others report quadrupedal beings, glowing eyes, humanlike faces, long arms, or multiple creatures traveling together.
Could the witnesses have seen bears?
A bear may account for certain brief or distant sightings, particularly in poor lighting. However, it does not adequately account for every reported feature, especially the alleged synchronized quadrupedal creatures with humanlike faces.
Does Joshua Tree contain enough wilderness to conceal a large animal?
Joshua Tree National Park contains extensive mountains, valleys, boulder fields, crevices, and designated wilderness. Whether such terrain could support an undiscovered population of large primates remains highly speculative.
