YEAR: 2025

SEASON: Summer

MONTH: September

DATE: 9

STATE: California

COUNTY: San Bernardino County

LOCATION DETAILS: 34.26622° N, 117.62683° W

NEAREST TOWN: Mt. Baldy

NEAREST ROAD: Mt. Baldy Road Highway

OBSERVED: On Tuesday 09/09/2025, I drove up to Manker Flats to hike the Mt. Baldy Bowl to Devil’s Backbone Trail. It was approximately 8am and The weather was approximately 55-60 degrees at the trailhead on Mt. Baldy road. I exited my jeep and walked to the back of it to prepare my gear for the long hike. As I was opening the tailgate on my jeep, I heard an extremely loud wail coming from what seemed like the end of the Mt. Baldy road which is approximately 1/4th of a mile north of where I was. The scream produced a strong emotional response from me and the sound went on for approximately 10-15 seconds. I captured a video that has a part of the scream and dogs from the 2 or 3 neighboring houses nearby.

The scream made me freeze and made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I needed some time to think about what I had heard before I started my trek.

I have been a police officer in Los Angeles for approximately 9 years and work on the other side of the freeway from downtown LA. I have never experienced the rush of emotions the wail/scream caused.

There were approximately 15 other vehicles parked where I was. It is a moderately trafficked area even during the weekdays.

I am not sure what made the scream or wail. I am an avid hiker and camper when life permits and have never heard this type of noise or had a reaction to a noise like I did with this one.

I did find a possible footprint on a nearby peak approximately 2 years ago but decided it was nothing. The footprint was at around 5,500 feet of elevation on Sunset Peak.

I was reluctant to share this but was convinced by my girlfriend because the sound made her uncomfortable even through a phone speaker.

Thank you all for your time and thank you for what you all do. Hope to hear from you all soon.

ALSO NOTICED: None

OTHER WITNESSES: I was the only witness. I was gathering my hiking equipment for my trek.

OTHER STORIES: None. I have seen a possible footprint approximately 2 years prior.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: Morning time. About 7:45 am

ENVIRONMENT: Mountain road. Approximately 5000 feet elevation.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Matthew Moneymaker:

I spoke with the witness. He is very credible and was indeed a law enforcement officer in Los Angeles. He knows a police officer I know, and that officer recognizes this guy in the video.

I listened closely to the recording. It sounds very much like a sasquatch vocalization, and very unlike a coyote or a human.

When I say "unlike a human" I mean not even like human that is trying hard to sound like a sasquatch ... The tone and power of a howl from a large sasquatch is very distinctive and impossible to mimic perfectly. For comparison look up "Ohio Howl 1994" on YouTube.

The witness only caught the last two seconds of the howl on his phone. I don't want to post the recording publicly because it will be shared without context and cause confusion. The important context was that it was around 10 seconds long, not just the two seconds you can hear at the very beginning of the recording.

I will be able to share this recording with BFRO investigators upon request but I will otherwise save myself the headache of making it public. I would post it publicly if he had caught the whole thing with his phone.

Unbeknownst to this witness: Over the years we have received other reports of sasquatch sounds and sightings in this same area -- the parking lot for the trailhead near the end of Mt. Baldy Road.
These incidents have tended to occur in the early morning hours or late afternoon.

Compared to most other parts of southern California, this area has many deer. This area near the trailhead parking lot is probably your best bet for hearing or seeing a sasquatch in southern California.

If you were up there on September 9 and you may have heard this loud vocalization please see the post about it on the Facebook Group for BFRO (https://www.facebook.com/groups/BFRO.group/). Please leave a comment on Facebook for that post.
