A strange creature reportedly frightened several motorist in the area. According to the stories the creature was described as winged, dark, and with unsettling reddish eyes, very similar to the famed ‘Mothman.’ The area of the encounters was the road leading to the village of Jose Poma. Locals claimed that it was the spirit of a person that had died or been killed on that road. Several bizarre encounters were reported, one of them involved a man called ‘Jano’ who told newspaperman Orlando Aceituno, that he had heard the sounds of voices coming from a shadowy figure, which flung itself against his car.

Another witness, ‘Nono’ Calderon, from Tolten, told Diario Presa Ciudadana de Temuco, that as he drove through the area he had to swerve to avoid hitting a shadowy figure that ran across the road in front of his vehicle. All those in his truck saw the figure and they described it as winged. Another man, Alejandro Cheuque, a driver from a local construction company reported that his sister had encountered the creature as she returned from a funeral. The giant shadowy creature seemed to have appeared out of thin air, she also had to swerve her vehicle in order to avoid striking it, the occupants of the vehicle behind her also saw the creature since it had been a clear night.

Local fisherman, Alejandro Gonzalez, reported to the newspapers that a colleague had actually struck the figure with his automobile, leaving behind a large dent on the vehicle. The force of the impact forced the witness to stop the car. Armed with a flashlight he then got out to check what had struck the vehicle. For several minutes he searched around the deserted roadway. He failed to find any traces or signs that he had actually struck a living being.
