Demonic possession fears prompt parents to burn down Ugandan teacher's home

A Ugandan school teacher found his home burned to the ground after parents accused him of being responsible for their children being possessed by demons. According to a local media report, the bizarre story started a few weeks ago when students at Maziba Mixed Primary School suddenly began "screaming, hitting themselves on the ground, and shouting strange things." Eerily, the class also chanted the last name of their teacher Expedito Monday. Administrators promptly shut down the school and organized a prayer service to eradicate whatever was causing the weirdness.

However, when classes resumed last week, it became apparent that the spiritual cleansing efforts had come up short. Shortly after the start of the school day, students began fainting, attacking each other, and exhibiting what one witness described as "uncontrollable strength." Local official Geoffrey Byarugaba lamented that "it started with just two learners, but within days almost half of the school was affected. They were crawling like snakes." While their teacher had not returned to school for the reopening, having been asked to stay away until normality returned, the seemingly possessed students once again suggested that Monday was to blame for the baffling behavior.

Unfortunately for the beleaguered educator, their accusations and a general panic that swept through the community resulted in parents and residents reportedly making the misguided decision to take matters into their own hands. A mob of angry individuals descended upon Monday's property and proceeded to burn his home to the ground. Authorities in the community decried the vigilante 'justice' and called for calm in the community until the matter can be resolved. For his part, Monday has understandably gone into hiding while, one imagines, he ponders embarking on a new and safer career path.
