Adding to what has been a crazy 2020, it emerged that an asteroid is heading our way on November 2.

That’s one day before the United States holds its elections on Tuesday, November 3.

It’s been a particularly disruptive year for the U.S, the country worst affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

On top of the pandemic, civil unrest has been waging for months as people have protested against racial injustices and police brutality.

The United States seems to be more divided than ever – which has made the upcoming 2020 election such a potentially pivotal one.

Now just to add a bit more fuel to the fire, it’s been reported that according to the Center for Near Earth Objects Studies at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a celestial object known as 2018VP1 is expected to come close to Earth on November 2.

The asteroid was initially identified in 2018 at the Palomar Observatory in California.

Based on observations spanning a period of more than 12,000 days, NASA has identified three potential impacts. But the asteroid is only is 0.002 km or about 6.5 feet in diameter. And according to data, there is only a 0.41% chance it will impact with Earth.

So there probably won’t be much to worry about. But it does still rather apt that such an event is taking place before what could be a seismic day for the United States.

Asteroids are rocky, airless pieces left over from the formation of the solar system approximately 4.6 billion years ago. They are very common and the currently known asteroid count according to NASA is 992,133.

The largest one has a diameter of about 530 kilometers.

For the most part, they don’t come anywhere near Earth. But there are some exceptions and just last weekend one passed only 2950 kilometers above the southern Indian Ocean.
