I spoke recently with Ambassador Charles Freeman, an American career diplomat for 30 years, about the upcoming meeting in Alaska between Presidents Putin and Trump, Russia’s (unchanged since December 2021) terms for peace, US complicity in Israel’s genocide and starvation of Palestinians in Gaza, and more.

“The Trump administration began in office by perpetuating the blindness and deafness of the Biden administration to what the Russian side in this conflict has said from the very beginning…The terms that Russia made clear in December 2021, and from which it has basically not wavered: ..including neutrality and no NATO membership for Ukraine; protections for the Russian speaking minorities in the former territories of Ukraine; and some broader discussion of European security architecture that reassures Russia that it will not be attacked by the West, and the West that it will not be attacked by Russia.”

 

“The behaviour of the Biden administration with regard to this matter was criminal. Not only did they ignore the ultimatum of December 2021, and its implementation in the Special Military Operation (SMO), they failed to understand: that the SMO is a euphemism for a limited intervention, not a general war in Europe; that Russian actions have been quite restrained, not a full-scale invasion as the Western media put it. Their Secretary of State never once had a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov. This is a criminal matter. It meant that the war was dealt with on the American side purely as a military matter, with no diplomacy at all. The Russian side has been consistent in demanding a diplomatic solution.”

 

“The United States is fully collaborating in a genocide. Starvation is something that the United States is participating in through the so-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which is a joint Israeli-American enterprise, which essentially consists of a series of traps for Palestinians—death traps—in the guise of feeding stations, which reinforces Israeli military control of Gaza.“
