Berlusconi was the true trailblazer for Trump

As Jason Horowitz recalled in his NYT article dated July 2, 2026, Silvio Berlusconi, the late Italian PM, was the trailblazer for DJT.
”Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian prime minister and billionaire mogul who died in 2023, is often considered to have set the mold for President Trump with his mastery of the news media, gilded taste and, above all, legislative maneuvers that drew accusations of conflicts of interest.
Mr. Berlusconi passed laws that appeared tailor-made to protect and benefit his family’s vast business empire. And his annual earning disclosures showed he had been paid tens of millions of dollars while serving as prime minister.
This week, new financial disclosures suggested that Mr. Trump has broken that mold by making at least $2.2 billion in his first year back in the White House, including about $1.4 billion from his family’s cryptocurrency businesses.
Mr. Trump’s profits are a haul once unimaginable for any leader of a liberal democracy, particularly a sitting American president. No modern Western leader has ever publicly disclosed such big windfalls while in office.
The Trump family’s earnings, experts said, have moved him into an echelon of enrichment more associated with strongmen in Russia and Turkey.
His gains were all the more striking because the United States has long positioned itself as a standard-bearer for financial regulation, anti-graft measures and the rule of law.
Yet his cryptocurrency earnings highlight an unusually glaring conflict: As president, Mr. Trump oversees the regulation of an industry that, as a businessman, he also greatly profits from.
The White House has denied that Mr. Trump or his family had engaged in conflicts of interest and he has personally brushed aside such concerns, saying this week: “I never speak to any of the people that run the money.”
That reluctance to acknowledge any conflict now makes it harder, experts said, for anti-corruption investigators in countries big and small to combat behavior that the United States, until Mr. Trump’s presidency, once condemned.”
But the similarities Horowitz recalls between the two aren’t all, and perhaps not even the most important.
In facts, while Trump has become very rich thanks to the office of the President of the United States, Berlusconi hasn’t so much enriched himself as a PM as he has avoided his personal impoverishment.
In fact, if he hadn’t entered government and, as such, benefited himself through ad personam laws, he would have risked losing his empire, which was already a giant before his election but very precarious in terms of its legal stability.
All his activities, in fact, could have easily been declared illegal by an alternative government opposed to his own, which could have officially declared his private commercial television monopoly illegal, as it was in fact legally in place before his election as PM.
Then there’s the very thorny issue of the origin of his capital, which I’ll spare readers the details of, but which, for a series of circumstances, is linked to the secret capital of the Italian Mafia deposited in Milan in the bank where his father was the director.
This capital was not claimed by the heirs because the Mafia bosses, who owned and were unaware of these funds, were assassinated by the new Mafia bosses unaware of the existence of these funds…at least initially and for a while.
These funds were used by the young Berlusconi for a major real estate development project (the construction of Milan 2).
Just as DJT was not immune to ties to the NYC Mafia during his time as a developer in that city, I guess…
But the similarities don’t stop even there.
There’s a whole hidden and covert narrative that certainly concerns Berlusconi, or likely DJT as well.
Berlusconi as a statesman was not a spontaneous political phenomenon, nor his was the individual initiative of a young and unscrupulous real estate entrepreneur and then media Moghul.
Before his election, international intelligence services such as the CIA, MI6, Freemasonry, and the P2 lodge were certainly working in the shadows to facilitate his rise.
Some say that judges Falcone and Borsellino were killed for this specific purpose.
In some ways, Berlusconi was also a puppet of certain transnational Atlantic Powers.
Not unlike what I believe happened with DJT and his alliance with international Zionism.
But the final analogy is extraordinary and very recent: the very aggressive ”anti-communism” of Berlusconi yesterday and Trump today.
Now, anti-communism is certainly not an original innovation; just think of Senator McCarthy’s witch hunt. Incidentally, the term “witch hunt” is used today by Trump, but with the opposite aim than McCarthy’s opponents.
The fact is that when Berlusconi was in power in the 1990s and early 21st century, there were no communists in Italy, save for a marginal and irrelevant minority.
By communists, Berlusconi meant the proponents of a mixed, state-run economy consistent with the formal dictates of the constitution and not aligned with the extremism of privatized neoliberalism.
Exactly the same as DJT today. The only difference between the two is the level, the degree of international political power, which is immeasurably higher in DJT’s case.
Even within a context of general personal and psychological decline due to age, and the many politically incorrect choices that have also accelerated the nation’s decline, at least that’s what I believe.
