Ditch the plastic: 10 kitchen hacks that really work

From how you store your organic fruit and veggies to choosing better pantry staples, these tips are all about doing better, not being perfect. Every single time you opt to reuse or recycle, you're helping create a future less clogged up with plastic pollution.

๐Ÿฅฆ 1. Skip the Plastic Produce Bags

Say goodbye to flimsy single-use plastic produce bags. Instead, use reusable produce bags made from cotton or mesh. They’re great for everything from leafy greens to apples, and they breathe better, which keeps your produce fresher for longer.

Did you know? Wherever possible, we are committed to using paper and compostable bags instead of plastic for our produce. Choosing the most enviro-friendly options is so important to our family-owned business.

๐Ÿฅ– 2. Switch to Beeswax Wraps or Silicone Lids

Plastic wrap? No thanks. Beeswax wraps are a natural, compostable way to cover leftovers or wrap sandwiches. Silicone lids are great for bowls and containers too, and they last for years.

Did you know? If your beeswax wraps aren't adhering like they use to, don't throw them out - there's many options out there to re-apply a beeswax coating to make them stick like new again!

๐Ÿ… 3. Store Food in Glass or Stainless Steel Containers

Swap plastic takeaway tubs for glass jars or stainless steel containers. They’re reusable, freezer-safe, and don’t leach chemicals into your food. Bonus points if you reuse old apple or pear juice bottles from your Good Harvest home delivered produce box!

๐Ÿฏ 4. Buy Pantry Staples in Refillable or Recyclable Packaging

Choose items like honey, eggs, sauerkraut, and coffee in reusable or recyclable packaging. At Good Harvest, our pantry staples are all about supporting local and low-waste living.

Look out for: Local suppliers using glass jars, paper cartons or compostable packaging at our Kawana, Yandina, and Noosa farmers markets.

๐ŸŒ 5. Choose Organic Produce - It’s Often Less Packaged

One of the many benefits of organic fruit and veggies is that they typically come with less packaging. Our produce arrives fresh from farm to warehouse with minimal plastic, so you’re skipping excess plastic and pesticides in one go.

Before buying new containers or bags, look at what’s already in your kitchen. Old takeaway containers, glass jars, and even rubber bands can all be reused before being recycled.

If you haven’t already, invest in a good water filter and reusable water bottles. You’ll reduce waste, save money, and stay hydrated without contributing to plastic pollution.

๐Ÿงผ 9. Choose Bulk Over Packaged

Whenever you can, buy in bulk. This reduces the need for multiple layers of packaging and is often cheaper in the long run. Bonus: fewer trips to the shop!
