Six ways to jumpstart your body's detoxification

While the body does a great job of keeping itself balanced, environmental stressors, fast food, and chemicals take their toll. And when the body struggles to detoxify itself, you may feel tired, bloated, or achy.

Luckily, you can help your body detoxify naturally without the aid of unnatural chemicals or aggressive cleanses. Try out our six easy tips below to help your body better balance itself.

  1. Hydrate with the Right Liquids

Liquids are essential for hydrating your organs, flushing out toxins, and keeping your kidneys in tip-top shape. While eight glasses of water a day used to be considered the rule of thumb, your body may need more depending on your weight and how much you exercise. Try using a water intake calculator to find your recommended amount. Consider adding lemon to your water, which helps stimulate the liver. And if you like a kick of caffeine in the mornings, swap coffee for green tea, which is loaded with antioxidants.

  1. Balance Exercise, Meditation, and Sleep

Not many people realize stress can exacerbate toxins in your body. Regular exercise, meditation, and sleep go hand in hand with helping your mind and body stay healthy. Whether you prefer running, boxing, or lifting weights, sweating pushes out toxins stored in fat. Along with keeping your body healthy, exercising is a great way to clear your mind and destress.

Yoga, meditation, and Tai Chi can also help boost your energy while reducing stress. Create a stress-free home environment so your meditation can be more effective. This includes keeping the living room clear and spacious so you have plenty of room to practice wellness activities, and most especially maintaining the bedroom so you have a stress-reducing space to rest in each night.

Getting the proper amount of sleep helps keep your body ready to exercise and your mind clear and able. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School says “. . .why we sleep is based on the long-held belief that sleep in some way serves to “restore” what is lost in the body while we are awake.” Adding, “For example, while we are awake, neurons in the brain produce adenosine, a by-product of the cells’ activities. During sleep, the body has a chance to clear adenosine from the system, and, as a result, we feel more alert when we wake.”

  1. Maintain a Well-Balanced Diet

Rather than adhering to fad diets, calorie counting, or juice cleanses, eating a healthy balance of foods is one of the best things you can do for your body. Some diets, such as raw, organic, and alkaline diets, can promote natural cleansing because they include foods that aid detoxification. For example, asparagus is a natural diuretic while basil is believed to help eliminate chemicals in the blood. But whether you follow a strict diet or not, avoid fast food and processed meals, and stick to a mixture of colorful vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds.

  1. Improve Your Home’s Air Quality

There are countless toxins in the air we breathe every day, from mildew and mold to smoke and fumes. While it’s impossible to eliminate or avoid these toxins entirely, you can at least control your home environment. An air purifier removes contaminants from the air by passing it through a filter that removes particles like dust and bacteria. Certain houseplants can also purify the air because they take in carbon dioxide and process it into oxygen through photosynthesis. Some plants serve as better air purifiers than others, including snake plants, ivy, and chrysanthemums.

  1. Enjoy Massages and Alternative Therapies

Massages, sauna sweat sessions, and dry brushing are all alternative therapies many people rely on to help relieve tension and detoxify the body. Massages not only are relaxing, but they also help your body flush out toxins. As pressure and strokes are applied to your tissues and muscles, your circulatory system is stimulated and toxins are released. Drinking a lot of water after a massage helps eliminate those toxins further. Sitting in the sauna, on the other hand, is much like exercising as it helps relax your muscles and sweat out toxins, while dry brushing stimulates your circulation and lymphatic drainage.

  1. Take Herbs and Vitamins

While most necessary vitamins like A, B, C, and D are found in vegetables and other healthy foods, some people may benefit from an added dose. For example, Vitamin A is critical for your immune system and keeping your organs working properly.

But if you don’t eat meat or dairy, you may not be getting enough Vitamin A and need a supplement. Or, if you feel your digestive system needs a jumpstart, try dandelion root or milk thistle. To help your body continually maintain a healthy balance of good bacteria, consider taking a probiotic.

Too often, we hear about trendy diets and pills that claim to magically cure the body’s ailments. However, our bodies work hard to naturally manage toxins. Rather than take over our bodies’ job, we can help them with the workload through several natural routes, such as exercising, eating right, and drinking plenty of fluids. Listen to your body and treat it well—the better you treat your body, the more energized, happy, and healthy you’ll feel.
