Giant ancient 'doorway' triggers ET debate

In the remote Dzungarian Alatau mountains of Kazakhstan, a colossal stone formation resembling a doorway has triggered a storm of speculation online. Rising nearly 40 feet high and wide at an altitude of 6,500 feet near the Chinese border, the mysterious structure was recently captured on drone footage, showing two explorers dwarfed by its sheer size.

The semi-circular formation has quickly gone viral, drawing comparisons to the fantastical gateways of popular culture, from the Doors of Durin in The Lord of the Rings to Jabba the Hutt’s fortress in Star Wars. Social media users and amateur archaeologists have eagerly weighed in, with some suggesting the possibility of ancient extraterrestrial origins. The Dzungarian Alatau range, long a vital passage between China and Kazakhstan, is steeped in history and dotted with archaeological sites.

But scientists caution against jumping to otherworldly conclusions. Mark Allen, a professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Durham, told the Daily Mail that the formation is likely a natural product of weathering, rather than human or alien engineering. Still, the find echoes other enigmatic stone structures worldwide, from Peru’s Aramu Muru to unexplained formations in Turkey, keeping humanity’s fascination with “doorways to the unknown” very much alive.
